I along with 9 other seminarians from St.Joseph College Seminary attended the Chicago March for Life. The 2018 Chicago March for Life was called the largest march in the midwest with over 6,000 people in attendance according to the press release by the pro-life organization.
The event started with a group gathering at Federal Plaza. Then we listened to speakers such as our (the) Archbishop of Chicago Blase Cupich, Bishop Don Hying from the Diocese of Gary in Indiana and Pat McCaskey co-owner of the Chicago Bears along with other distinguished guest speakers. After the speeches, we lined up on the street to walk a mile around the city of Chicago and back at Federal Plaza.
It was important for me to be there because I believe that every human has a right to life. The idea that someone can choose whether an individual can live or not is not only wrong, it is unethical and immoral. As expected, if the March for Life pro-life organization was present, a counter-protest by those who identify as pro-choice would follow. So our presence was very important to show that we care and believe that it is a human right to have a chance at live.
This is my first time attending the March for Life as a seminarian, I have attended before because of my association with the Respect Life Office (now the Office for Human Dignity and Solidarity) for the Archdiocese run by Dawn Fitzpatrick and Ray Pingoy. But attending the march as a seminarian had a different appeal to it. I see myself not only as someone who just supports and agrees with the pro-life movement but as an advocate because I could potentially be a leader of a community of faith and this is something that the Catholic Church holds as a very important topic. Human life is a gift by God given to each and every single one of us. We need to defend those of us who can not defend themselves.
