BRISBANE, Australia — The Brisbane Bandits enter the final homestand of the regular season with no margin for error.
Brisbane (13–18) hosts the Adelaide Giants (14–16) in a four-game series at Viticon Stadium beginning Thursday night, with the Bandits needing a sweep to keep their faint playoff hopes alive. The series opens Jan. 8, continues with a doubleheader Jan. 9, and concludes Saturday night in Brisbane’s final home game of the season.
The math is simple, if unforgiving: Brisbane must win all four games this weekend — and all four next week against Sydney — to reach a maximum of 21 wins and remain in contention for a spot in the playoffs.
Adelaide, meanwhile, arrives in Brisbane with more flexibility. The Giants sit tied with Perth at 14–16 and still have a five-game series against the Heat remaining after this weekend. For Brisbane, however, this series represents the only realistic path forward.
The matchup pits two clubs that have taken very different offensive paths this season. Adelaide owns one of the league’s most productive lineups, entering the series with a .298 team batting average, a .372 on-base percentage and 173 runs scored. The Giants have consistently applied pressure with contact, ranking near the top of the ABL in hits and OPS.
Brisbane has relied more heavily on power. The Bandits’ .239 team average ranks last in the league, but their 37 home runs are the most in the ABL. Robbie Perkins (.324, 7 HR, 18 RBI), Rixon Wingrove (.292, 6 HR, 23 RBI) and Liam MacDonald (.295 in limited action) have anchored an offense that has often lived and died with the long ball.
Pitching has been a challenge for both clubs, though for different reasons. Adelaide carries a 5.30 team ERA, while Brisbane enters the series with a 6.34 ERA after allowing 193 runs in 31 games. The Bandits will be looking for stability from starters Jon Kennedy (3.00 ERA), Kolby Kiser (0.73 ERA) and a bullpen that has struggled with command but flashed swing-and-miss ability.
The series also doubles as a celebration weekend at Viticon Stadium while being the penultimate weekend of the ABL regular season. Thursday night is South Korea Night, while Saturday doubles as the Bandits Legacy Night honouring the Bandits’ alumni who completed the historic three-peat championship, and it is also Members Night.
