New student's guide to all the resources HWC offers

College can be an exciting part of life for students of any age. In the beginning, it can also be confusing and frustrating. To help you get started on the right path, Harold Washington College offers multiple resources in one building and is located many more here in The Loop.

The computer lab, room 404, is home to more than 140 computers, both HP and Apple. Computer lab assistants wear red vests and are on hand to help.

"Students and staff can come in for any computer related assignment and complete it here in room 404" said Lamar Houston, an aid.

Students can print in black and white ink for 10 cents per page and color ink for 50 cents per page at any time the lab is open.

The fifth floor is dedicated to math and the library. The fifth floor is under construction and a new state-of-the-art Math Emporium will be built. The Math Emporium will be used as a center for anything math-related. Tutoring and homework relating to math can be completed here as well.

The fifth floor is also home to the library, or Multimedia Center.

"The library is for students and staff alike," said Kevin Cook, a library assistant. "The lab in room 404 is for relaxed casual studying, the library is for more focused study work. The library is also home to the college's only scanner, students can scan documents, text books or art assignments and send them to their emails for no cost," Cook said.

Students should be aware that because it is the only publicly available scanner in the building, there is almost always a line to use it.

To use the printers in the library, students must buy a "pay card." Pay card dispensers are located in room 404 by the wall printers and before the gates of the library.

Another good resource is the tutoring centers. The Writing Lab is in room 203A, the Math Emporium is on the fifth floor, and English tutoring is in room 409.

Other offices that students should be aware of are the business office, the Student Government Association (GSA), Veterans Services Center and the Disability Association Center (D.A.C.) which are all located on the second floor.

The Wellness Center is in room 1041 and is for anyone who needs a helping hand.

The business office helps students take care of any debts and fees and helps students complete FASFA applications.

SGA is home to all the student clubs. The Veterans Services Center offers services for students who have served in the armed forces. The D.A.C. office is for students who have special needs.
