Round 7 Series Preview: More Than a Series. It’s State of Origin!

BRISBANE, Australia - The Brisbane Bandits return home to Viticon Stadium for a marquee Boxing Day Weekend Series as they host the Sydney Blue Sox in a four-game Round 7 matchup from December 26–28, with the league-leading visitors arriving as the benchmark of the Australian Baseball League through the first half of the season.

The series opens Thursday night at 6:00pm before shifting into a State of Origin doubleheader on Friday, December 27, with games scheduled for 2:30pm and 6:00pm. Saturday night’s finale is a rescheduled contest from Round 1, originally slated for November 14, giving the clubs four meetings in three days on Brisbane soil.

Sydney comes north sitting atop the ABL standings at 16–7 and has been the most productive offense in the league. The Blue Sox enter the series batting .296 as a team, with a league-best 136 runs scored and an .815 OPS. They’ve consistently pressured opposing pitching staffs, collecting 216 hits, drawing 80 walks, and striking out fewer times than Brisbane while maintaining a .379 on-base percentage. Sydney has already had success against the Bandits this season, holding a 4–3 edge in the head-to-head matchup.

The Blue Sox pitching staff has been just as impressive. Sydney leads the league with a 2.97 ERA, allowing only 63 earned runs in 191 innings, while holding opponents to a .249 batting average and a 1.23 WHIP. Their starters have worked deep into games, recording two complete games and three shutouts, while the bullpen has converted five saves and limited late damage throughout the season.

Brisbane enters the series at 10–13 and six games back of first, but the Bandits return home encouraged by flashes of form during their most recent road trip to Perth. Offensively, Brisbane is hitting .247 as a team, with 108 runs scored and a .772 OPS. While the average trails the league’s top clubs, the Bandits have shown power, leading the ABL with 29 home runs and ranking near the top in doubles. Plate discipline has also been a positive, with Brisbane drawing 96 walks, the most in the league.

Much of that production has come from the middle of the order, where Robbie Perkins continues to anchor the lineup with a .345 average, six home runs, and a 1.070 OPS. Rixon Wingrove has provided consistent power and run production, while Max Durrington, Will Riley, and Kyosuke Mashiko have all reached base at strong clips during recent stretches. Seung-Min Ryu has also made an immediate impact since joining the lineup, riding an active hitting streak into the series.

Pitching remains the key challenge for Brisbane. The Bandits’ staff enters the weekend with a 7.17 ERA, having allowed 158 runs and 32 home runs through 23 games. Opponents are batting .299 against Brisbane pitching, and the rotation will be tested by a Sydney lineup that excels at working counts and capitalizing early. That said, the Bandits bullpen has shown encouraging signs of late, with several arms carrying active scoreless streaks and flashes of swing-and-miss stuff that could be pivotal in a condensed four-game series.

Defensively, Brisbane has been steady, with multiple regulars carrying extended errorless streaks, a factor that could loom large against a Sydney club that thrives on sustained innings and pressure baseball.

With the calendar turning toward the second half of the season, the stakes are clear. Sydney will look to reassert its position atop the standings and continue its strong play against Brisbane, while the Bandits aim to leverage home-field advantage, the energy of a Boxing Day crowd, and the State of Origin rivalry to close the gap and reset their season. Four games in three days present both opportunity and urgency, and Viticon Stadium will be the stage for one of the most important series of Brisbane’s campaign to date.
