'Shoes Keep LumberKings Down Despite Multiple Comeback Attempts

CLINTON, Iowa – The Clinton LumberKings (5-4) fell 8-6 to the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes (3-8) at NelsonCorp Field on Tuesday night.


The LumberKings attempted multiple comebacks during the game but struggled to bring runners home. The LumberKings ended the bottom of the first inning with the bases loaded. They stranded 11 total runners on the base paths.


The Lucky Horseshoes scored in the top of the first inning on a passed ball and error to take a 2-0 lead. They scored again in the top of the second on an RBI ground out, Jimmy Koza's RBI single, and Collin Jennings' two-RBI single to take a 6-0 lead.


Clinton's bats came alive in the bottom of the second as they responded with a four-run inning of their own. Chase Womack got things started with an RBI single. Byran Belo followed with a two-RBI single to cut the lead in half, 6-3. RJ Sherwood hit a pop-fly on the infield but the pitcher dropped the ball allowing another run to score. Clinton trailed 6-4.


In the following inning, Jaison Andujar hit his first RBI single to take a 7-4 lead. He would repeat his success in the top of the fifth for his second RBI double to take an 8-4 lead.

Clinton attempted another comeback in the bottom of the fifth as Cougar Cooke hit an RBI double with Brayden Buchanan's RBI ground out to finalize the score 8-6.


Clinton's starter, Kieran Bailey, made his 2024 season debut but struggled after one and one-third innings pitched. He allowed three hits, six runs, four earned, two walks and recorded one strikeout in his loss.


Springfield's starter, Brody McNiel, also making his 2024 debut pitched just one and two-third innings with one hit, three earned runs, three walks and recorded five strikeouts. Connor Roark earned the win for his two-and-one-third innings pitched allowing one hit, three runs, two earned, two walks and struck out two LumberKings.


The LumberKings return to action with a doubleheader tomorrow against the Burlington Bees. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. for game one. Fans may purchase tickets for game one and remain at the ballpark and watch game two. Catch all the action on PLTV or 100.3 WCCI-FM
